Do you guys think it would be wise to try to fix the tank I have instead of buying another one? It's rusted through in two places, one on either side of the tank. Pinholes really, very tiny. Should be easy to fix.

Holes are easy to fix but

    Hey

It is easy to fix the holes but it is the rust that you really need to stop also.Maybe the hole is 1-2mm but if the rust is over 10 cm area then I would try to find another tank.

    Best regards

    Gunnar

I would also suggest a new tank, however if you are up against the wall this is what you
can do to minimize the rust.First remove tank from bike and drain all fuel out of it. Take somewhere around 16 oz. of small machine screws, nuts , sheet metal screws and other misc.small sharp clean objects and put them into the tank with a few ozs. of light oil, like
WD-40. With this mixture take the tank and start shaking it so that you are agitating
the hardware inside the tank ,what you are doing is removing the rust.
Continue to do this until you are tired, then add about a quart of Kerosene or
paint brush cleaner and shake a little, drain out the mixture and repeat until the mixture
comes out clean, that at least should do it for the rust inside. For the outside I would
use fiberglass to fill the holes. You can do this or just buy a new tank and forget about this mess!!! eddie

So eddie, i just put some WD-40 and about a pound of metal in my tank. that should prevent it from ever rusting, right? ;-) Gonna take the bike over a few jumps to slosh it all around.

Well let me say this Hawk,if my ability to write insrtuctions is so lacking
that you interpreted my words as you stated, I think I will go hang myself.
But really, I knew there would be many such comments as yours. The
instructions that I wrote are not something that you would see in a metalurgy text book, but I would be willing to bet this method has been used
more than once in many third world countries. regards eddie
