Has anyone ever attempted, and scceeded, to put inverted forks on a 5th gen? If so, is this a good upgrade, say cost effective? Thanks for any feedback.

    Yes, it's been done.

Good upgrade? Cost effective? That all depends on what you want to get from the upgrade. It won't have you winning races.

    It looks co as hell.

Is it at all possible to swap on inverted forks and keep the linked brakes?

Everything's possible. I'm not sure if it could be done without custom machined caliper mounts

The best VFR with inverted forks that I've seen was a 6th gen with yellow R1 forks w/ brakes. Damn did it look good.

If I was considering a fork swap, it would be the complete front end.

Forks, triples, brakes, wheel, fender ..... everything.

Is there a stock front end that would be "great" right out of the box? Almost EVERY front end I see that is "race ready" has no stock internals left in it. You may as well just buy some Ohlins forks and figure out how to make them work. Now THAT would be trick.

If I do ever go into swapping on a USD fork setup, keeping LBS, the forks would probably be fully built. Valves, springs, etc by either traxxion, racetech, or ohlins. Cheaper then buying a set of ohlins forks :)

RC51 is the most common front end swap, plenty of threads here and vfrd about the details. Cost me less than $1K after reselling the OEM parts. There isn't an easy way to retain the linked brakes, but delinking them is pretty straightforward.
