My chain broke and broke some pieces around the front sprocket. I am replacing the crankcase cover and where the top screw goes theres a crack. Is this part of the engine? How can I go about repairing the cracks? Do you think it’ll be bad to leave it alone? Thanks for any help!

Hi Frosty and Welcome to the Madhouse:Welcome:

I saw your other recent posts and notice you have not yet said hello to the rest of the folks on here! So please find time to visit the introductions section and say hello tell us a bit about your VFR and your riding history and add a photo or two of the motorbike. You may also want to update your forum profile to include an approximate location (state/town is ample) so it appears alongside all your posts and if you need help with a problem you may find someone living nearby is willing to swing by and offer advice/pick up a wrench - especially if you have a well stocked beer fridge :drink:.

As for the crack in the engine casing - ideally you do need to fix it - as if you install a bolt and it subsequently breaks loose inside the chain area it could cause a fair bit of damage. The choice being a welding or epoxy. Either will probably work OK provided you really go easy on torquing up on that specific bolt thread.

What makes sense depends on money and whether you have access to a decent metal works who can very carefully weld the crack in the metal without stressing the main engine casting. Personally as the attached casting is not massively stressed I would probably opt for epoxy especially if you don't have a mate working in a metal shop.

I assume you will be replacing the damage casting and also fitting a new well chain.

Sadly too many people just ride and ride and ride and overlook the state of their chain until it causes grief. Checking the state of your chain is part of the recommended pre-ride checks you should do every time you ride, as a sudden failure could lock up the chain and the rear wheel with bad consequences.

Consider that you were lucky this time.

Meantime let us know how you get on... Take care.

I appreciate the feedback! I will definitely make my way over and say hi.

Just so you know, its an 04 vfr no abs (or at least deleted abs if that's possible?).

As for the crack, I got replacements for the crankcase cover, front sprocket cover, sprockets, and chains. I never dealt with welding or used epoxy on commercial vehicles (just helicopters (; ), what sort of epoxy would you recommend? Someone told me to use jb weld, would that work?
