Eh every one Im new to the street bike thing. always loved Honda dirt bikes and ATVs. so when i finally started looking for a bike i went with Honda. found a 87 VFR 700 F2. its in awesome shape runs great. just need a license now. just one question for any one that may know. is there any flaws to these bikes that i should look out for to head off any future problems? cant really find that much on this exact bike.thank you for any replies.
Take a look at the wiki and read as much as you can. Figure out which generation of VFR you have, then read that section of the forums for as long as you have time. Flaw #1: understand that most times someone buys a 20 year old bike they ask the same questions that have been answered over the last twenty years. You'll need to do some reading while you are waiting to get your license. Can you post some pictures of the bike? Add where you are to the member map?
2nd gens (86-87) are pretty bullet proof(as all VFR's are, VF's(pre 86) had some issues, just give it a good once over check wheel bearing, head bearings for noise & play. If its a bike that has been ridden & not sat around thing should be ok. If it sat then think about things like master cylinder seals, clutch slave seals, caliper seals & movement(seized pins or pistions) Like most Hondas of that era the biggest single "failure" will be fork seals. It would be a good idea to change all fluids just for peice of mind( one of those things I practice more so in therory than reality myself on new vehicles, but its a good idea & it will familarize you with the mechanical working of the bike). Pick up a service manual, a factory Honda would be best but like all factory manuals it presupposes a lot of basic knowledge. After market manuals are somewhat better @ going through things step by step but often have incorrect specs & procedural items in them.
Thank you for the information I am planning on going through the whole bike. I am very mechanical and think that working on stuff is just as much fun as ridding it.have a honda manual on the way already. Ive already had all the plastics off just to look at things and to change the oil.here are some pics of my bike its been down so is was repainted.[/IMG]
