I've had similar thoughts on the few charity rides I've been on; that is just ugly.

dayum. Wonder what started the chain reaction? Some of that looked avoidable, but it also seem some were not paying attention to what was happening up ahead. Hope no onw was seriously hurt in that pile up.

    Man! That's bad!

I agree Vman, some looked avoidable. Notice how many locked up their brakes!? You can tell, it looks like a man and women, lowsided in one of the pictures.

You know what its called when you locke the front brake and ride it in? Surfing the bike!

    man, alive that's scary!

I wonder how fast they were traveling?! you would think seeing people upfront with smoke and people falling over it should ring a bell, possibly a group of people unfamiliar running with such as large group? or maybe a bad surface?!

i'm confused...and scared about riding in groups for now....

    edit
something is just wrong with that!
AHHH I found the problem...there are no VFR's there!

This is exactly why I do not ride in groups. If I screw up, I want it to be my fault & not some twit who crashed into me. The biggest group I will ride in is 4. I had to ride in a group of 8 for a mandatory McGuire AFB class last year & I freaking hated every minute of it.

    KC-10 FE out...

I almost couldn't keep watching. Really scary.. and avoidable. No one had any control on that group. I've led some big rides, but never over 200 bikes and only for Toy Runs etc.. into DC, with strict rules, and police escort.

They were like 10 wide with no set following distance, recipe for total disaster which is what ensued. I'll now only ride with my best mates and a few of them at that. 5-6 bikes total max.

Ive never been a fan of group rides: too many chances for things to go wrong. That many riders with minimal escape routes is a recipe for disaster; looks like some target-fixation as well. A good example of why you look down the road instead of at whatever is right in front of you.

I have driven this rode in northern Brazil! It is a very dangerous place in many ways. Traffic rules and cops are non-existent. I would never ride a 2 wheeler in Brasil, The risk factor/danger factor is at least 5 times greater of being killed/injured in Br. Unless you have been out of the good ole USA, you can't imagine how safe the US is!

Well definately not a pretty sight. I have to echo other statements made that some accident looked avoidable and looks like some people had their brakes locked up. I like riding with groups, but I am aware of the risks. I have been very lucky and the group rides I participated in had really great organization and road captains who knew what they were doing. The other thing with group rides is that some people get bored and want to cut up and speed and do some stupid stunts.
