I was going to do my third oil change on my 2014 VFR 800 yesterday. I was gathering up all the tools I needed to do the job and could not find my oil filter cup wrench. I looked through all 12 drawers of my tool box at least 3 times. No tool. I went downstairs to my reloading room where tools sometimes hide out. No tool. I then asked my wife if she had seen it and she told me she had seen it on the floor of the garage several months ago. I then looked all over the floor and under some shelves and standing racks. Ah ha...No tool. I then realized I also needed my 3/8th drive ratchet to attach to my then missing oil filter cup wrench so once again back to the tool box. Now I can't find my ratchet. Now I tell myself they are together and once I find one I will find both. After another 25 min of looking I am ready to go buy new tools and get this job done. I then wondered could I have left the wrench attached to the new filter the last time I changed the oil? I head over to the bike only to find my ratchet on the ground where I had put it an hour ago. AGHHH... I then got down on the ground and looked into the area of the oil filter is mounted only to find the MISSING oil filter cup wrench laying on top of the headers where is had been stored for the past 4500 miles. 20 minutes later I had a fresh filter on and new oil in the bike. I made sure ALL tools were put up where they belong. I think I qualify for the Dumb Ass of the Year Award.

You would have been dumb if you stored the wrench someplace where it would have fallen off, gone under your tire, and knocked you down while riding. However, you used a highly robust storage method which kept you safe and preserved the wrench at the same time. You also did all of this subconsciously. I have no choice but to enthusiastically applaud your ingenuity.

And that is how you know you did not put it on too tight or wait too long to change your oil.

Lollzz ... it only needs to be on hand-tight. Too tight and you start pinching the o-ring and it's a PITA to get off.

Exactly. Just run it for a few minutes before putting the fairings back on and check for leaks. Screw it on until it starts getting snug, then about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn max usually.

Are you putting some of the used oil you drained out on the o-ring before installing?

No, I put new oil on there, turn till snug, then one hand twist as hard as I can. Do this on Bikes, cars, trucks. Never had a leak yet....

When I was an AV installer, I had to go into the attic to pull wire. I had my good wire cutters with me and on my next project I couldn't find them. I swore I had them with me that day, asked all of the guys I was working with if they had seen them, nope! I figured I left them somewhere and they were gone now. A couple of days later I had to return to the one project I did the attic crawl, low and behold as I entered the attic space, there were my cutters!

I had the same thing happen with one of my test CDs. I was using it to test the audio system and forgot to grab it, similarly, I had to return to this site and when I booted up the system, what's playing in the CD player? My test disc!

Huh. You may be tightening too much even by hand then if it's difficult to get off after. But .. if it works for you, then that's all that matters. :)
