So, I hop on my '93 viffer this morning at 5:30am to head into work and I notice that the headlights seem a bit dim. I get up to the first corner and my turn signals aren't working, so about 2 blocks later I pull over and the bike dies. I try to re-fire the bike, but the battery doesn't seem to have enough juice. Thankfully, I'm on top of a hill so I getting her rolling and fired up just enough to get home....

So, since it's 5:30 in the morning and I need to get to work, I don't take much time to check things out. Besides, electrical is not my strong suit!! Needless to say, the battery is about dead and I noticed a burnt electrical smell, so I removed the seat and the R/R is very hot to the touch and the smell seems to be emanating from that location.

Is my R/R toast? Is there some easy troubleshooting to perform for a newb to electrical?

    Thanks!!

    Toast

Go through the standard R/R checkout.

    Charge the battery.

Check connections, both battery and R/R plug. Cut and solder if necessary.

Make sure R/R is grounded and bolted down good.

    Check voltage at RPM.

Otherwise, do a search and replacement R/R.
