New to the board, new to riding, and new to the mechanics of a bike. Got permit last week, taking free pa safety course next month, and bought an 86 VF500F today for $450 with arounf 60k miles. Its late so I dont want to post all its issues, but shes in rough shape. Stalls real easy with any throttle, but if you ease into it itll rev up, doesnt feel like it revs up strong like Id expect tho. Tanks leaking. Tons of zip ties holding various things together or on, have to lift the foot brake to get light to go off, and have to play with it to even do that, will idle awhile and then randomly stall. A big issue Im really worried about is a noise at idle that goes away when I pull in the clutch, coming from the motor area, to me it sounds like a knock. Gets worse with clutch barely engaged, then better fully engaged.

Ok I guess I lied, those are just a couple issues. Im assuming carb issue with stalling, but no idea where to find a how to on how to clean it. Will do some searching tomorrow, but if I could get some tips on things to look at with this thing, itd be much appreciated, even links to other threads etc. Would like to bring back its glory. Its all flat black now as well. Thanks, look forward to being a part of the group!

For starters, Welcome to The World! Secondly, to really be part of the group your intro post should have pics of your ride, this is so we know you're real!

As far as the issues you're having, carb cleaning would be step one. Coincidently there is a post from someone in your part of the country looking for similar help, so check it out.

I'm not too familiar with the VF500 but there are a few on here that are, hopefully they will chime in soon. For threads and other info on your ride, there is a section on the forum for your bikes generation, same section the post above is in, that would be a good place to browse through, you may see who is knowledgeable or find resolution of other ails your bike has.

    Cheers

Thanks for the tips! Actually just found out that the person I bought the bike from is on this board. He has a couple of videos regarding valve adjustments, but you can hear the noise the engine makes in the videos. His channel is here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1FrEyCpDCVFQDVIcRopzVg

The noise goes away when you engage the clutch
