Hi...I have an '86 Honda VF500F which I recently purchased and am restoring. The po told me about an oil leak from behind the drive sprocket and once I got this girl running again, it is readily apparent. Have removed the drive sprocket and can watch oil seep out from around the seal. I have a new oil seal but wanted to know people's experience on this and recommendations before getting started...I'm hoping there is a way to pull out the old seal and push in the new one with removing the engine??? ...thanks!...ron
Not sure on your 500. The factory service manual should say. Usually a leak there is an indication of the countershaft bearing starting to fail as well. On the 3rd gen, you have to completely split the cases in order to replace those components.
This is a 3rd gen 750 but you can see the groove in the case that holds in the seal and bearing. Really no way to get it out without splitting the case. If I was a betting man, I'd say your 500 is probably the same.
