    The early Magna/Sabre/Interceptor V-4 engines had minimal oil flow to the valvetrain, the operating pressure being about 15 PSI. If I remember correctly, some, but not all, also had some valvetrain components (camshafts?) that had some surface hardness or surface finishing issues. Combine the surface issues with low oil flow, and parts could wear prematurely.

    The modification adds a spacer between the engine and the oil filter . The spacer has two passages that direct additional high pressure oil directly to the valvetrain by means of external oil lines. Installation is pretty easy.

    This is one kit that I know about;

    Holeshot Performance Products, Inc.

    Look under "Honda V-4\Engine Components\Top End Oiling Kit". It shows a decent picture.

    I put the top end oiling kit by Mark Douglas on my '86 500. That was about 5 years ago and I noticed that his website is no longer up and running. Anyhow, the bolt on modification was a piece of cake to install.

    The original Honda V4 engine "expert":

    Dave Dodge - SabMagFAQ

    http://www.drp123.com/contactus.html

    Dave dodge was part of the original V4 drag racing force in the 80's known as RC engineering.

    His web site sucks, always has. He's a mechanic, not a "computer wienie" and his site shows it. He answers the phone promptly and sells a top end oil kit for around 150 bucks. He has both a "drill and tap" kit and an oil filter "adapter" kit for top and oiling cures.

    There is no more knowledgeable expert on the V4 engine, he's an "old school" gearhead.

    And No, I don't work for him....

    I have a 1986 VF500, it was my understanding that the oil kits were only needed for 1984 & 1985 but I seen that Stewartj239 has installed one on his 86. Is this something that I should be doing as well? I thought the 86 was redesigned to correct that problem?

    I put a top end oiling kit on my '86 500 only because I couldn't find anything that definitively said that it wasn't affected. At the time, my bike only had 600 miles on it and I did it more for peace of mind.

    The engine design of the '86 500 is basically the same as the '84 & '85. The bikes that were notorious for the top end oiling problem were the 1st generation VF700/750. In '86, Honda fixed the problem with the 2nd generation VFR700/750. I think that this is what you are referring to.
