Fellow VFR's, Friend of mine T-boned a deer last night (he thinks he had slowed down to about 50) and woke up surrounded by First Responders and a crowd of onlookers.
He saw the deer coming up out of a ditch and just had time to touch his brakes.
He was wearing a riding suit, boots, gloves, and full face helmet, and his injuries in total are a cracked collarbone and a scratch on his arm where his suit wore through on the pavement.
No concussion (helmet is all scratched up), or serious injuries.
While I know how "Cool" it is to ride without gear, it takes less than a second for your life to change forever. Having a severe brain injury, or spending your life in a wheelchair due to a stupid decision is not cool, so even if you don't care about your own safety, think of those you love, those you are responsible for, and those of us who will end up paying your bills, if you make the wrong decision.
All the gear, all the time.

I'm sorry to hear about the accident. I agree though, ATTGAT.
I'm going to college right now and almost no one wears all the proper safety stuff. It's "uncool" to wear a ballistic nylon jacket, pants, gloves, boots etc.
I always tell people at school that a jacket is more comfortable than a skin graft.

I hate deer. I avoid riding in the late evening or at night like the plague.

Sorry to hear about the crash, but glad your friend is OK, flynlo. I'm guessing the bike is toast.

I passed 2 deer during my long ride yesterday - 1 running parallel to me in an open field (on the other side of a fence) and 1 standing right by the side of the road in the dark.
Hopefully they'll learn before it's too late, or give up riding altogether.

The worst part is that once you wad it into a deer, you've got nothing to haul your catch home with.

Glad to hear your pal is ok, I also avoid riding at dusk or later in the fall, they get all goofy this time of year.

I have total trust in my deer whistles. They are so effective and reliable that I don't even keep my eyes open when riding. :bs:

I was riding through the Adirondacks after dark recently. No moon and heavily overcast, so it was pitch black. A bit disconcerting, but it didn't bother me too much while I was riding. Lying in bed at night was a different story. It's then that all the pictures and crazy scenarios pop into my head and really freak me out.

Glad you're OK, though! Could have been really bad.

In South Africa, wild life can be a real danger. There are a lot of game reserves around my city and kudu clear the game fences (10ft) quite easily. So I try to avoid evening and night travel on a bike. Those corkscrew horns will skewer you like a kebab, gear or no gear! But the most dangerous things on rural roads are migrant labourers. They have no CLUE how to judge vehicle speeds!!

Glad to hear your friend is ok!

During my run-in a couple of weeks back, my boot very well could have saved me from some pain.

I realize its only a small scuff from the hoof, but I shudder when I think about what could have happened if I was only wearing tennies.

    Stay safe out there fellas.

Unfortunately VFR is whacked. It was a beautiful Pearl Yellow Y2K. He doesn't remember taking off, but the landing must have been a bitch, cause VFR is bad AO. Insurance is coming through though! Replacing the ARAI and Aerostitch, he's just waiting for a check from the bank.

Those rat-deer vermin bastards hang out in my front and back yard, and then stare at me like I'm the one imposing. They feast on my wife's flowers (no big deal to me, but it pisses her off). They huddle up and I swear they're plotting against me, working out their plan to cover all access roads in my immediate area so they can "get" me as soon as I leave the garage. Even the voices in my head keep telling me to get some explosives and... Oh, never mind.
