Don't know if you can get anything like this there in the UK, but would recommend trying this and seeing what is left!

Having owned cars in upstate NY, I can tell you rust starts from the inside out, like an iceberg, by the time you see it, it too late!

    Oops, forgot picture:

Not a lot of point in using metal rescue when you have holes in the tank unless you want to find out how many other holes there are and you need to know that before you go any further. Welded in patches are the only real option if you can't find another tank and then after it is welded a POR15 treatment is probably a good investment. Not cheap but repairing these old bikes can get expensive and the shape of the tank doesn't help either

More than a little caution should be observed when welding any steel vessel that is oxidized inside. The iron oxide is porous and permeable. Some where on the net there's a recounting of a dude that was going to arc weld some casters on a used drum (55 gal) that once held acetone. The welder burned through the bottom of the then inverted open drum, the acetone fumes ignited, the drum took off like a rocket and killed the poor SOB.

To maybe find more holes or maybe no more holes in that tank, remove all the old paint with stripper, with the usuall cleaning, take the tank into a dark room and using one of those now cheap LED flashlights and a length of line drop the flashlight into the tank Be sure to turn the flashlight on.. thus the reason for the edit.. ;)

You might try using a shaker and out some gravel inside tank to dislodge rust flakes. My idea of the Metal Rescue was to find out how many more rust holes there might be. I did salvage a 250 gallon fuel tank by grinding rust and using an industrial grade epoxy.

How much did that tank increase the range of your bike?

Billy Billy Billy, I thought the same but wasn't going to make a comment.
Problem with these tanks they are all getting 30 years old and finding another good one is always going to be difficult, if you find one go for it but remember they can all have some rust, just hard to tell how much, could end up with another one not much better than what you already have

Never had to stop for a year, but made it very top heavy!

One of four oil fuel tanks in our house (1000 gallons), need to be refilled at lest twice a year @ $4.38/gal.

LOL.. Glad you didn't fall over..

I had a place in Seattle that used fuel oil. The tank was buried. PITA.. the burner and ducting took up more cu/ft of usable space in the basement than I care to think aboot.

I agree. The tank in question sounds like its toast. Those holes are from the inside oot. Maybe salvage the filler and petcocks go hunting.
