Is it worth it to swap from the airbox to pods? I have a bike that once had cali emissions equipment on it. Mostly/sorta removed by some previous owner.

My current thoughts are to remove the airbox, trace out all the random vacuum lines, and re-route and clean up from the removed stuff.

One of my favorites is the tank vent line that used to go to the charcoal canister now just coats the inside of the left fairing lower with fuel... Need to get that fixed.

I know they're really popular with other bikes, but any real gain on the 700s?

Not a good idea and not even practical on the VFR because the airbox assembly holds the carbs together as a unit.
