I ordered plugs using NGK's site, wasn't at home to look in the manual, and they recommend a CR8EH-9 which crosses to the iridium CR8EHIX-9.
Now I see the service manual recommends a CR9EH-9 which crosses to CR9EHIX-9.

I know the 8 is one step hotter, and I'm finding that Hondas generally have either a 8 or 9 heat range. I really don't want to toss $40 of brand new iridium plugs, but I don't want to risk issues either. Any thoughts?

I don't know your riding habits, or what type of fuel you use...but you can read through this and decide if the hotter range plug fits your situation. If you don't feel comfortable with what you read concerning a hotter plug, you might decide to contact NGK and ask them if a swap for the 9's is possible.
