All VFR R/R's get very hot. I just had mine fail on my 5th gen a few weeks ago...and it was the aftermarket upgraded one from Honda. Honda seems to have fixed the R/R issue on the 6th gen by relocating it (and having a larger finned unit than the stock 5th gen).....after the 6th gen wiring harness issue that is.

As you probably know, R/R generate a lot of heat converting AC to DC and it doesn't help that honda under-engineered the VFR's charging system with wires that are too small a gauge, undersized R/R's, and poor location of R/R's to name a few.

I am not aware if a larger aftermarket one is offered for your model year, or if tightwad (member here) offers anything for pre-5th gen bikes on www.wiremybike.com or not.
