Quick question - is it necessary to remove the lower radiator to replace the starter?

According to the '90-'97 service manual, no.

Only the oil filter is in the way, the starter can be removed from the left side of the bike from behind the front headers.

The real question is this: Why do you think your starter is bad? Did you test other components first before ruling that the starter was the problem?

The only reason I ask is that I have seen a lot of people that have replaced a starter motor only to find out that they had a much simpler and cheaper to fix problem...

If you bike is a VF750F (not a VFR) then no, the starter is wide open. You might need to remove the lower cowl (sometimes called a "chin fairing", why I don't know). This would make it a little easier to get to some of the bolts.

    Oops - misread the title.

But my advice still stands for all VFR750F owners...

Yes, it's a 1984 VF750F. The manual (Clymer) says I have to remove the lower radiator, but that didn't look necessary to me. I can unbolt the radiator and swing it up out of the way.

As for the starter itself, it turns over like a champ when the bike is cold. Different story when the bike is hot - "grRRrr . . . grrRRRrrr . . . clunk!" When the bike cools sufficiently, it's WHIRR! WHIRR! VROOOOOOOM!!!!"

I have cleaned the ground wire connection and the connections to the starter itself, but still the same story. I will remove and inspect the starter for wear and report back.

EDIT: By the way, what's up with the Thanks and Thanked stuff over there on the left of the post?
