When I raced my ATC250R in the California desert, my dream was to be good enough to race one of the Baja races, alas I stopped racing (lack of $$) and never did get to race in one. My second dream was to at least ride Baja on two or three wheels!

Best to have a shitload of sponsors for the Baja first. A friend did a cost analysis years ago on how much it would cost to do the Paris-Dakar when it was still from Paris to Dakar. Big pesos.

For a look at what goes on in the Baja now, this ain't bad:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386423/ Source this oot at a public library or Netflix...

The road from TJ to Ensenada or across the Baja to San Felipe was always pretty good. In the 60s the paved road ended at Cabo San Quintin. The roadway was graded and at the time having a four wheeler was suggested to continue on.

Hear that on the sponsorship, my money ran short before I could even get the attention of sponsors. Oh well, I had fun while I raced and that for me was satisfying enough at the time, just couldn't quite get to the level I had hoped for. Once our truck was stolen it put a damper on going out and eventually we just never replaced the truck and slowly stopped riding off road all together.

I have Dust to Glory and even have a digital version loaded on my iPad which I often use to test video input plates when I commission audio/video systems. Always seem to get the attention of people passing by the room, I often get a few people, mostly guys but the occasional female, who will stop and watch for a while before going back to work.not much like watching guys go full throttle in a dust cloud and flying through rows of spectators line along the side of the road. Not sure who is crazier, them or the racers!

Almost any sort of competitive bike gig needs sponsorships whether it's financial or supportive. What is ironic is the use of decals and stickers on rigs from manufacturers who are getting free advertising + the profit from the sale of the item. From just around here, the tire and oil stickers could almost cover the bike and make folks think all bikes are Harleys. :) Maybe SOW could get some pesos from Hello Kitty...

I bet worldwide more spectators are lost than racers in all manner of off and on road events. The biggie is the Euro style car rallies. The outside of a turn or corner is not the smart place to be when a 2000 lb car is going by at 100mph plus. Same deal at the Baja.

Much the same deal up here along the coast. Signs and warnings up the wazoo about not "turning your back on the ocean" and every year several are lost.

You'd think that by showing Dust to Glory, the industry might send you at least a little kickback for boosting sales.. NOT! LOL
