My neighbor just bought a 2002 VFR. He had been looking at my 2000 for some time and always expressed his like of the VFRs. Last night we went for a ride and switched bikes for a while. Both are basically stock with mine having a Vance & Hines slip on, his a Corbin seat.

I could not believe the difference in feel of the two bikes! To me they didn't even seem they could be related. The 6th gen felt like a more mature version of my 5th. A little quicker to steer and smoother, making mine feel like a bit of a rebellious teen of the family. The Vtec didn't seem to kick in noticeably disruptive like I have read. I have to say I liked it. Seemed a little more comfortable too, but I attribute that to the Corbin.

He remarked that he liked my 5th gen better. He is about 15 years my senior and a lot more experienced with riding. He thought mine felt more sporty and light weight. Loved the sound of the gear driven cams too...lol.

He half jokingly mentioned a trade. Mine has roughly 50,000 kms now and is pretty immaculate and well maintained. His, 35,000 kms and about the same for condition. Both look as though the previous owners cared much about them. I have to say it piqued my interest although I'm not sure if I would regret such a trade at some point should he be serious.

Just thought I'd share. It was good to see the other side of the fence.

Can not go wrong with either one, the 6th gen feel a bit more comfy and more sport toure oriented. IMO

Why trade. I mean you two are obviously friends. You ride together. You like each others bikes. You allow each other ride ride one another's bike. Hell, it is not much different than a marriage without the divorce and alimony at the end. I don't need to know if you share wives. Too much info. Reg71 rode mine while I rode his (bikes that is) and when we traded back, we did not need lawyers involved.

my observations after creating a hybrid 5th/6th gen:

The geometry of the ergonomics are the same.

The 6th gen has 20lbs more weight mounted up high in a heavier rear sub-frame and the under-tail exhaust.

The 6th gen has the .5gallon larger fuel tank which is wider at the top and front but the same low and in the rear.

I couldn't speak for the internals of the suspension but my observation of opinions here is that the 5th gen shock was less sporty out of the box than the 6th. It's also older by know with more viscosity breakdown in the oil.

My unscientific conclusion is that, short of the extra 20lbs up top and the vtec on the 6th gen, with suspension tuning, both bikes can ride near identically.

Sounds like the basis for a new movie "Brokeback Viffer"

    Sorry couldn't resist.
