So how much damage did they do???

So some thieving pieces of shit tried to steal my bike last night. It appears they moved it about 5 feet to give them better footing to work off of and then proceeded to break the steering lock. When they broke the steering lock it looks like the left clip-on wasn't tight enough as it rotated clockwise. It appears that the same happened to the right clip-on but I couldn't tell (5:30 am, had to be at work by 6).

So obviously I couldn't SEE any damage as it was dark. But assuming that all they did was break the steering lock, how much damage are we talking?

 

Tough to say but you will need to pull the upper triple clamp and inspect the damage. Hopeluflly it is just the security bolts and maybe the ignition.......could be worse......much much worse,

 

What would be the worst case scenario? I guess my question really should be if it could be much worse am I better off not touching and letting my insurance deal with it?

 

My crystal ball is in the shop........your gonna have to take a peak to have some kind of idea and weigh that against your deductable.

 

Sorry to hear about that. Anyone that's ever had anything stolen or vandalized knows what a sickening feeling it is. Makes me want to hit someone so hard their snot will bubble.

Here's my thought: Unless you already pay a horrendous amount for insurance - and most bikes are cheap, all things considered - file a police report and file and insurance claim. I pay something like $260 annually for full coverage with a $100 deductible on comp and coll. So what if my premium goes up. What's it going up by - 20%? Even if it went up 50%, if you happen to have a "major" issue, you're still well ahead of the game financially. You pay for insurance - don't be afraid to use it.

The best that happens is that the damage is minimal, and no claim necessary. But if it turns out that all sorts of shit is eff'ed up, then your one step ahead by having the police report and claim ready to process. The sooner you get this process moving along, the better.

So in a strange twist of events, I went home to lock up my bike. I put a cable around the pillar of my deck and through the front tire. I put a Bully wheel lock (the one with the audible alarm). While I was readjusting the left and right clip-ons I decided to fire it up to make sure the ignition wasn't broke. Fired right up. So while I was at it, I decided to try the steering lock. The steering lock WORKS like it literally had nothing done to it.

1) How is it working if they "broke" the steering lock?
2) Is there another way around the steering lock?
