So it turns out I was missing almost an entire assembly (air cleaner unit) from my bike. Went ~8000

This is in reference to my '02 VFR800. Here's the exploded view of the parts: http://i.imgur.com/V1losnZ.gif

I'm missing the air cleaner, which is part # 2 (that top unit, including all the things that attach to it, like #'s 8, 24, 3). The air filter is still on the bike though.

I've been hearing a rushing sound of air any time I open the throttle, which I thought was normal. Maybe this is what's causing it. Also I've been getting some pretty crappy city miles, between 23-29 mpg (lots of stop and go traffic, though). Anyway, what's this part for? I looked online and it's at least $220 worth of parts (including a new air filter). After going ~8000 miles with it, with no signs of issues, do I need to spend all that money to fix it?

Looks like I was able to actually get a whole airbox assembly on ebay for less than $20, including shipping. Let's see how it goes!

What the hell? How recent did you purchase the bike? Call up the folks you bought it from and tell them you paid for a whole motorcycle.

If you don't have the airbox cover, where do the mice live?

Yep, looks like the PO took the snorkel and flapper mod one step too far!

Public Transit may be the best solution to your problem. Ya. I kinda think you should replace those parts. I think the seller who only wants 20 bucks for the whole thing has your number.

Heh, I posted on another forum and they promptly answered it for me. :p

Eh, private owner off of craigslist. All in all, I actually got this bike for an amazing deal ('02 VFR with ABS, 6666 miles on the odometer, 2 Brothers exhaust, full givi mounts and luggage, and handlebar risers, all for $4350. And it's never given me a problem in the ~8000 miles I put on it.) Also, judging by the guy I bought it from, I don't think he's the one who took the unit out.

NYC, we have rats. They live in the subways.

Screw that. I live in NYC, home of the shit ass metro system. Spent all winter on public transportation, so this won't stop me! I think 20 bucks is a fair price to spend on chance.

Speaking of which, I saw that some people do some kind of a flapper mod. What exactly is that about?
