Hi all, on my '86 vfr 750 the starter button seems to be "not right". Sometimes it will not spring back out to regular position after pressing it.
And seems like there is 3 positions. One where the headlight is on, one where the headlight is off and the start position when pressed.
I am thinking this is not normal and its a short or something.
    Any suggestions?
    thanx

It is a normal and long overdue failure if yours has lasted this long. If you take the switch apart you will see that the button has two hinges on the back of it and one or both have broken off and the contacts are misaligned now. Find a later model switch gear set , the wiring is the same and is a far better design. I have a gen 5 switch set on my gen 2.The left side switch gear on the 86 750 is a sub harness and is not as easily replaced.

there's two positions. The headlights are shut off while the starter is cranking. When the button returns to normal, the headlight current goes thru the switch. The plastic in the switch is brittle and poorly designed besides the fact that it melts from heat in the switch.

Best thing you can do is go to a local salvage yard and pickup a newer set of controls. Take the oportunity to update the bike.

I had the same problem with my '85 500, and recently had the same problem with my '02 750 Shadow because a bad ground in my light bar melted the switch. $85 for the new switch from Honda on my '02
