Hey folks, please help. Long time bike lover.....first time bike owner. I have an '87 and that was doing fine the first week I had it. Came home last night and cranked it just to listen to it. It turned over once, didn't engage, then started making a free wheeling sound. Really freakin out cuz it's been in the 20's all week. Gonna be 60 plus sat. Really wanna ride.

Sounds like the starter clutch is not engaging, I would take it apart and inspect it for damage or cracks for starters. Barely a two beer job. Lots of threads on the subject.

Sounds similar to what happened to my old girl. Here's what I found!!!

I can't believe this starter was actually working for awhile.

wut he sed, starter clutch, yours may be cracked. I do sparkling water now, so its a two sparkling water job, (that don't sound too manly )

Rebuilt starter motor with new brushes and its a champion now. I did not have your symptoms though.

And cable connections. Your battery may be fine but a bad connection will make it seem like there is not enough power.
The start clutch is torque driven. So if it doesnt turn hard and fast the the clutch wont engage. I have a little 200 and the starter connection post was in bad shape. it would just spin with out cranking. Cleand up the contact and it went back to work.

If everything is fine connections wise then like above, tear apart the starter clutch and see if it hasnt cracked or tore out the engagement dawgs.
