I'm redoing my '87 700 that I bought last year, as some of you know. It has yet to see much of the road because of the rebuild but it is close, so I thought others could be included in my experience now. There will be lots of pictures so I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

P.S. I know some of what I'm gonna do to the bike will not be well received but please keep your comments to yourself if you have anything nasty to say.

    Thanks

Bike as purchased for $300. Sad....sad....state. Some positives: 4-2-1 exhaust (with an empty muffler can), Fox twin clicker shock, good running engine.

Bike is pretty much being held together with JB Weld at this point.
Yes folks, this JB Weld goes all the way through.

Alright, now you see where I'm coming from. All that's bad is apparent. All that's good is not at this point. We'll find as we go. Almost all of the work is done but I'm going to do the thread as if it hasn't.

Like the foot peg some jack-ass came up with? I found underneath a bunch of electric tape.

Removed sub-frame and most everything else for inspection and some cleaning. Airbox had K/N filter sticker on it but unfortunately no filter. Subframe was ok but will need some spot welding near the bracket the tank screws into.

List of things I'm going to do:

    • replace engine covers
    • clean carbs
    • get tires
    • repair frame bosses
    • get plastics for front and sides
    • covert wheels to F2 rear and gen 5 complete front end
    • replace dynojet crap in carbs
    • evaluate brake system and get new lines for front
    • build custom tail w/ storage for electronics
    • redo seat to fit tail section
    • Finally paint

Yeah I just wanted to let everyone in on it as if I hadn't. Sorry for the confusion to any insiders. I will show everything from the past year but it will be as if we fast forward each post.

If you need any parts you may want to check with user matt1986vf500f

I believe has an 87 parts bike that he is selling off.

    Regards,

Wow,that poor bike was totally roached!
I guess at that point just about anything you did to it would've been an improvement.

Definitely have at 'er SuperTex. Should be interesting to see what you came up with.
    Good Luck with your build.

    Easy stuff first.

    From this

    To this
    [IMG]

    And this
    [IMG]

To this - Sorry not a better pic
    [IMG]

Learned something with the cam cover. I got an 86 instead of an 87 which we found was slightly different. It was hitting one of the plastic caps underneath and was not letting the cover seat properly. A little bit of file action fixed it up.

First idea of a tail section.

    Little more structure.

More ribs and some more shape.

Section that houses the tail light. This took the most time since I wanted to figure out a way it would be self supporting.

This is all going to be the first attempt since I'm making something new but functional. It has a compartment for electronics and was designed for a specific light I found on a bike shop shelf.

Form foamed with the cap on and some fiberglass jelly for some shape.

You can see I've already given the seat some shape to accommodate the rear section. It gets more shape later.

Couldn't help but put some plastic I got in the mail on for a little test fit to see how it would all go together.

After some fiberglass I dusted the whole thing with some black paint to help me see the shape.

One of the biggest concerns for this bike were the frame bosses that hold the footpeg brackets and the bottom connection of the sub-frame. Toe cutter and Toxic helped me cure this with a little creative metal cutting and welding. The whole deal was already on another thread so I'll just post a couple pics.

    Me standing, Toxic down low.

    Cutting the old broken away.

    Cleanly cut
    [IMG]

    New bracket
    [IMG]

Drilled with bracket reinstalled. Looks even better in person. Thought of doing the other side it came out so good.

Thanks to Toxic and Toecutter I can now put my feet down so to speak.

    It's late so more later
