I have a 2006 VFR 800. About 2 seasons ago it unfortunately was put underwater in a rapidly rising flood. After the flood water receded, I immediately took the bike into a service station without trying to start it. They steam cleaned everything and flushed all the coolant and oil out 6 times while refilling, running for a minute, draining and resetting each time etc just to be safe. Anyway, long story short, it runs like a dream and there hasn't been any ill affects except for two things that I haven't yet had looked at because of money issues, but now will most likely unless I can come up with a solution myself. Problem 1 - Since that issue, the tachometer no longer functions. Doesn't even blip. It stays at a steady 0. The engine runs perfect without a hiccup and everything sounds great, it's just the tach doesn't report anything. I'm thinking I just need to replace the gauge or maybe they accidentally disconnected it and never connected it again during service? What common things should I check before I hand it to them? I'm not a great mechanic but I could do well with a little help. Problem 2 - The trip odometer and clock both reset like the battery went dead every time I turn my bike off. I don't believe they replaced the batter when I took it in for the flood repair / preventive repair as it still worked, so I bought a new battery the other day. I won't have a chance to replace it until this weekend. It starts up just fan and doesn't seem to take a lot to get it going so I was thinking this wasn't the issue, but am kind of hoping it is. If it's not, what could I check next? Is it possible these two things are related? Do I need to replace my whole dash or what? Everything else works just fine and the clock and odometer work perfect once the power is supplied, they just reset to defaults when I cut power. I appreciate any help you guys can get. I felt like I had to abandon a child in the garage, and was waiting on pins and needles for the first ride test after the shop gave me the clean bill of health. (Mostly, as they noted both issues but I had told them I don't have the money to investigate back then). -Jesse
Oops, I apologize for leaving this out, but I got lucky in one aspect and maybe this will help diagnose that the shop made a mistake, but when I took it in for the flood flushing, they ended up replacing a bunch of electrical / wiring harness connectors and blowing them all out and drying them with compressed air. I think there was a warranty recall or something, but it happened to workout and that stuff got examined / replaced / cleaned due to the warranty work... could the tac or clock issue be a result of not hooking something back up right in that regard?
