ok, got a question, my 86 vfr700 hasnt been running in a few years (i just bought it) when I start it up it won't run unlesds its fully choked, even after it warms up. I pulled the air cleaner box off to get to the carbs they seem to be getting enough fuel, I can watch them suck it down, my question is about the air box I taped off 90% of the opening and I could open the choke up a little bit. is there a piece missing on the air box or are there other problems?
your problem is that your pilot jets (idle circuit) is gummed up with bad fuel. The choke is cutting out the air, making the mixture correct to compensate for the plugged jets that are not delivering enough fuel and creating a lean condition at idle. Ufortunately your going to need to clean your carbs to fix the problem. The fuel you are seeing is being pulled through the main jet past the needle by the increased manifold vacuum when the choke is closed, which is where it should not be coming from at idle. Good luck
Your problem is very common on this site. Before plunging into the carbs, see whether Sea Foam might do the cleaning before you do it by hand. You have the Honda Factory Service manual, right?? how many miles on your bike ??
uhhh, no on the manual havent found one yet, sea foam? hows it work? spray it in like carb cleaner, Ive never used it. edit: The odometer is showing 60000 + i have to get the lense out and cleaned/replaced I cant see it clearly
Seafoam, you can get it at pretty much any auto parts store at autozone, parts america, pepboys etc. This stuff is also great for induction cleaning on cages when allowed to suck in through a vacuum line atop the intake manifold. It doesn't take long for gasoline to start to oxidize and leave those nasty deposits, especially in warmer weather. If I don't plan to have used the tank of fuel within a week or two I noramlly put stabilizer in when I fill the tank.
you're likely to screw-up a carb cleaning without the Honda Service Manual : some free downloads are available.
