Buddy of mine is going to look at a 94 vfr but the.guy told him the bike has a shifting problem goes into first and second no problem but wont go into any other gear I guess what could be the worse case scenario.

Shift drum would be pretty piss poor. Had a gen1 with that very same issue and cracked drum was the problem.

Also could be bent shift forks possibly maybe ? Cani't rule it out, can ye , eh ?

Any excessive forcing of the lever during gear change or trying to shift while rear wheel is not rotating a little can cause damage to shift forks. Slots need to align with slots in the gear selectors, and only some rotation of front sprocket or rear wheel can line up shafts.

Otherwise......... risk damage, nasty clunks, loud bangs, chipped teeth on gears, which will only get worse.

If it won't get the gears while the front sprocket is turning, you might need a full teardown to fix it + $$$ part$$$+ a close contact with an internet "discount" parts supplier on line.

Try ONE hard ride on a gen 4, Matt, and tell us what you think; you think it might just light years ahead of the design parameters of ANY VF series.
The gen 4 just might be the apathiosis of VFRdom, after you ridden one hard, IMO. Who needs VTEC ? "Last of the carbed VFRs" is a landmark in and of itself. Having no cam chain tensioners is an incalucable benefit cuz Hoinda never got it right.

Best balance between power, tire width, suspension, weight. OK, no R6 or R1, but this bike is capable of doing more than you can uinless you're Freddy Spencer.

Fast road bike but a little fat, but fatties can be fun doncha tink ?

If I could find a forth gen for the right price I would think about it. But my fifth gen does me just fine. But to tell the truth the 500 would run circles around he 800 in the mountains.

Unless somehow there's something funny with the ratchet mechanism, it's a case split to fix. Basically a complete engine overhaul.

Pass unless he needs it for a parts bike.

A pristine 4th gen in mint working order is only worth $2400 max

If clean and a VERY good price I would jump on it but I doubt that is the case.

Its in decent shape it won't wow you and the price is ok but if I was buying I would go down at least 500 bucks more.

Thanks Tink for posting up a link to the sale thread on your post.

Matt, check out the link and see if your friend would be interested. I can trailer it down a few states and meet someone in the middle for pick up.

Why am I selling? A couple reasons, the main reason is to fund the purchase of a TZ125 I've been blessed with and the VFR is going to sit and the wife won't permit 3 bikes in the garage LOL! But with 2 kids I don't have time for 3 bikes anyway.

I second Squirrelguy's comment on the last carb'ed VFR... The throttle response on my 4th gen was perfect. My 5th gen with FI is a small step backward, at least in that regard. The entire bike has never felt quite as "dialed in".
