Hi, has anyone tried this? The 500 pumps are gone, but there are repro VF700 pumps that appear externally identical. Are they compatible? I would like to stay with a pump versus going gravity feed, so am still looking for options here. Thanks

Please post which "repro" pump you are talking about.

Here is one example, off of eBay. There are lots of chinese made pumps listed that appear to have similar characteristics to the pump used on the 500 (2-4 psi output, 25-30gpm output) but the listing say they are not compatible with the VF500.

    eBay item 182635446444 - "Fuel Pump For VF1100C VF700F Honda Magna VF700C VF750C VF750F 700 750 V65 V45"

My understanding is that the newer FI bikes are using fuel pumps producing a lot more pressure, like 40psi, while the Interceptor 500 is a carb bike needing only 2-4psi. So I think I need ideas on other older bikes using the same setup where their pumps are still available. Seen a recommendation for the Mr. Gasket 42S, but that is going to be hard to fit. Would rather use something designed for motorcycles and similar in configuration to the original part.

You're right. and has ZERO to do with the info I just posted. All of my bikes are mid 80s and use the low pressure pumps. y'know like the ones I linked to?

    ???

dozens of models from all the big 'cycle companies used the same-as-ours pump for years and years up until fi came along, so salvage yards are loaded with good used ones.

an initial test is to check for continuity between the two wires at the plug, where zero continuity means the pump is bad.

Thanks, and sorry. Thought these later bikes were FI. Will take a look at wreckers for these older bikes.

Gravity feed works perfect on a VF500F. I am no expert but mine gets plenty of gas with gravity feed.

AND I have the 84-85 smaller petcock. Fuel flow is just not an issue with these bikes. Fuel pump not needed.

I think there are plenty of threads on this site to prove this out also.

Just a short follow up to close this issue out on my bike. I tried the gravity feed approach while using much of the stock fuel line layout (line from tank back to the area of the fuel pump, in line filter, line back to the carbs) , but found that the bike ran out of fuel and quit once the float bowls emptied. So I ordered a used fuel pump from a late 80s bike as was recommended by Captain 80s above. But I wanted to try gravity feed again but using a shortened fuel line run, just tank to carb inlet, as a test. Bike ran fine, no fueling issues at all. So I think I will add a small in-line fuel filter and try it again before trying to fit the non-stock fuel pump when/if it ever gets here.

I raced a VF500F on gravity feed. Even on a partial tank to save weight and WOT, no issues at all. 1986 went to gravity stock, but they did fit a larger petcock and ran fuel to a splitter on top of the carbs instead down to the left side. My bike is 86 tank to 85 side inlet carbs. Many reports of zero issues regardless of configuration as long as you are going direct as possible.
