Hi all,I have a question regarding my valve clearances which I have just had a look at for the first time since owning my 5th gen with 50,000 klms on the clock.
According to the service history, they were checked and 2 shims done at 26,000 klms. And now at 50,000 they are still spot on.
But they are all at the lowest end of the clearance,so should I.........

A = Check again in 10,000klms and decide what to do then?
B = Shim them now to the higher gap and then leave for 25,000klms??
C = Leave them till another 25,000 klms, then check again?
D = Just ride the thing and stop worrying?

Having just gone through this and removing the cams, I say DDDDD!!!

What, if any, sealant do plan on using when you reinstall the head covers? Can't find Hondbond anywhere locally, so I'm looking for substitutes.

I have just got it back together, and I didn`t put any sealent on the covers.
The last person put so much on, that there were pea sized lumps on the inside of the cover!!!
I don`t know about you but I reckon a lump of silicone running around inside my motor won`t do it any good!!
    So hopefully it won`t leak!
But with a few great tips from other vfr dudes the next check will be much faster and easier.
I reckon you could do it in less than 4 hrs without pulling the airbox and tank off. What a great tip.
    Best of luck.

Did you remove the old sealant from the head cover gasket? If so, what did you use?

    Thanks.

Did you buy new valve cover gaskets or did you use the old ones again?

Go talk to the dealership. I know that one of the Yamabond's is the same as the Hondabond. I just can't remember if it is Yamabond A or Yamabond B. I also believe that the valve cover gaskets are meant to be reused so long as they are still in healty condition.

If you're a 'by the book' kinda guy...C. Otherwise D.

The only place I use sealant on valve cover gaskets is at the corners of the 'half moons' on valve covers so equipped...and just a little bit...Hondabond works for me. That's how the factory does it.

Did any of you guys buy any particular type of shim kit when you did your adjustments? I really hate to be at the mercy of the dealership

This is one of the advantages of doing it yourself: you know what the clearances were at the previous checks and therefore you know how fast(or slowly) they are changing. I check mine every 16,000 miles, therefore I choose C. Going loose is not a good idea IMO.
