Not news to most on here I suspect but it may be useful to someone. I have been checking stuff on my 86 VF500F2 Euro model and I spotted the pilot screws were three turns out as opposed to the spec in the FSM of 2 and a 1/4. So I changed them back to spec and went for a ride. OK so now I know why they were three turns out. Bike was MUCH nicer to ride with the 3 turns out setting. 2 and 1/4 made the bike very snatchy indeed. Haven't returned them to 3 turns out yet as I want to see if it has a detectable affect on fuel consumption. If it doesn't I'll be putting them back to three asap.

Went to the British Superbike races on it. Round trip of 600 miles. Went with a friend on a Honda Blackbird. Had trouble keeping up but I managed. Casualty was fuel consumption. Managed to get 33mpg (all imperial). Never better than 42mpg. Seems pretty bad to me but then I'm pretty big and I had luggage and the 33mpg coincided with a dash to the ferry so was +90mph all the way. Anyone on here seriously caned their VF and got better mileage than that 33-35mpg which would be equivalent to 27-30 US mpg (eeek!). I mean a long high speed run from full to empty. Getting about 80 miles before reserve kicks in.

Obviously my pilot screws settings seem rather secondary now...
