I have a VF750F 1983 that was bought for me as a project. I've now got to the stage where I'm almost ready for testing it but a particular noise is making me wonder if it's worth it.

It came to me already running and sounding just about the same as it does in the video below. As far as going anywhere near the engine, all I've done is top the oil up and wiggle the HT leads to make sure they're connected to the plugs properly. Now, I know these had a reputation for their weak cams and I expect I already know the answer, however any input would be appreciated i.e. what precisely the noise is and how to get at it, and indeed if it's a straightforward job.... or not.....

Either the valves need adjusting or you may need new cam chain tensioners. (common) Or both.

Grey is spot on, it would be a good idea to pull the tensioners and at the very least inspect them but would recommend just replacing them and inspecting the cams and adjust the valves. Aboot a ten beer job.
