Hi all I have a 2003 vtec 6th gen and had a spark plug blow out on me on the front cylinder and need to remove the head to either re thread or sleeve it, and also check that the bottom half of the plug isn't bouncing around on top of the piston (I am hoping it is still in the end of the thread or fell down the exhaust downpipe) I am quite competent with taking things apart and having a go myself, but I am stuck with what to do regarding the timing chain, I have got as far as taking the cam cover off but am stuck with how the chain comes off/locking the timing in place ready to remove the head. has anyone had the same issue or have any tips on how to do this please? thanks in advance
You need to access the tensioner which is on the back of the cylinders, if you already have the throttle bodies removed you have easy access, remove the central access nut and then you will be able to insert a screwdriver and wind back the tension to loosen the chain. Best to get the manual and make the special tool to lock the tensioner in place. VFRDiscussion.com site has the manual in the Downloads section. Once the chain is slack you can remove the cams.
thanks for that. However, good news, i managed to easy out the end of the spark plug and re threaded the hole (with grease to catch the swarf) and have used a slightly wider spark plug (its a 6 on the code but i have a 9 on order), runs sweet now. next on the list is the clutch as it slips when the VTEC kicks in!!!
