Hi All, My 01 vfr has suddenly stopped idling. It was running excellent yesterday. The bike started initially but stalled and was idling well below 1000. I tried to get it started with throttle but no go. Battery is dead now and is charging but bike is not able to start. It made a weird popping sound near the front of the engine. I have petrol. I can hear the fuel pump when I turn the key. Any ideas what would cause this type of thing. I am going to check the plugs but have no idea what could cause it to suddenly start idling like a pig. Any ideas to check/fix the bike would be appreciated.. P.S. I unplugged the power commander in case that had failed but it was the same thing. P.S.S. The bike is turning over fine just wont fire and when it did briefly it was like a dog...
your battery is dead? try charging it. computer thingys like certain voltages. if its without that acceptable range. than no worky
I give up.. OK, I have thrown my hands up and am sending the bike in to Honda. I'll let you know what they find...
Hi Pap11y, Might have got a bad dose of petrol. It has been raining heaps. Did you run the tank right down? Might not hurt to remove the tank and empty its contents. Just thinking..
Thanks Mark Yeah I'll try that tonight as an absolute last ditch effort. I have to re-install the airbox and get it back together so they can pick it up tomorrow..
Bike at shop Last night I empty'd the tank and tried fresh fuel. No go I did notice the the FI light was flashing once every 4 seconds like the fourth cycle of the process. I was thinking it could be the coil that provides power to the plug. Hopefully I will be able to post what had failed today for future reference. Man I hate waiting for a shop to tell me the cost of repairs.
A hose had disconnected since I last removed the airbox. This had cause the bike to run rich and eventually foul the plugs. Apparently it is up and running at Honda now. I re-iterate I am never EVER removing my airbox again...
Good to hear, easy fixed. I read an article in Aust Road Rider a new owner of a '99 VFR was riding along happily and his bike died irregularly. He was pretty upset about his purchase and eventually took it back to the shop (his first time since 1960). The mechanic was only young and he made some reference to having grandkids older than him. An hour later the mechanic rang to let him know his bike was ready to be picked up and all fixed. The problem - a loose battery terminal. Keep on riding.
Ok, $350 later bike is running again. So it was caused by me not showing enough attention to detail when re-installing the airbox. The mapsensor was not connected which made the bike run really rich and eventually fouled the plugs (that explains why it took so long to fail). Battery and plugs have been replaced and the throttle body adjusted. Bike is now hunky dory. hoooorrraaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy!
Happy to hear that it all worked out! $350 is a pretty tiny bill, all things considered. Now get out there and ride like you mean it!
