vfr800 cooling fan not coming on

    Help ,cooling fan not coming on,there is power getting to the switch, switch is ok, all connections seem to be alright. I have let engine run to 107 degrees , fan still does not work, if I take off the wire on the radiator switch and touch the radiator fan works. I have tested with voltmeter and everything seems to be ok. :mad:

    I assume you're talking 107 celcius judging by your location. You have one of two problems. Either the fan switch you're checking at the top of the radiator is not seeing 107 degrees which would mean your coolant is low. Or, the switch is faulty and needs replacement.

    As you are aware the folks on here really like Photos - so post up some proof you own a VFR800 or they wont believe you...

    As for the fan not working - can you confirm which 800 you have and possibly update your profile to include the model/year? Meantime check the coolant level and consider flushing the system if the coolant looks contaminated. If all is good, then you should be able to source a genuine Honda replacement thermostat at a discounted price from David Silver Spares.

    Many thanx for replying so quickly,coolant is up to the top of radiator,replaced switch with one from another bike,tried it out before removing it (working ok) ,still no luck. :frusty:

    Many thanx for your info,it's a vfr 800fi-x 1999 ,coolant has been changed,radiators full, switch changed with one from another bike (tested and working),don't want to run it more than 107degrees just in case, still no luck.:gun3::gun3:. Sorry I have no pics yet.

    HHHMMmmmmmmmmmmm. Do you happen to have a non contact pyrometer so you can check the temp at the switch/sensor itself when the temp gauge reads 107 and verify that the fan switch is getting the correct temprature. I sense a disturbance in the force, by way of coolant being full but possibly not flowing past the sensor, thereby not letting it read the correct temp.

    BUT WAIT !! Have you tested the fan itself by grounding the wire to the thermoswitch ??

    I do not have my prints handy, but is it a two wire temp sensor, if so measure ohms from ground side to frame, key off for this test

    Thermal switch grounds fan when temp reaches trip point. Fan works, replacement switch works, so try a jumper across thermal switch to check ground connection of switch.

    I am having the same problem on BOTH of my Gen6 VFR800's I have no idea at what they are supposed to come on, anyone?

    The fan switch on the radiator should close at 98-102C. Note the switch just completes the path to ground. You should have a live 12V feed to the fan at all times the ignition is on. You can jumper the fan motor to any grounding point to make it work and bypass the switch; pull the spade wire off the switch and connect that to a ground.

    Thank you very much. I just got a call back from the local Honda dealer and he said the same thing. He gave me some advice on troubleshooting it so we will give it a try tonight or tomorrow.

    one down one to go, wifes 02 VFR was a fuse.

    There is a lot to be said especially if you live in hot climates - not the UK - lol, that fitting a switch to also make it a manual turn on is a good idea. Basically take the earth wire to a switch by tapping into the non live side (PREFERABLY with a light) and this will allow you to turn the fan on early. Leave the existing connections in place so even if you forget the thermo switch should turn it on as normal.

    ya I agree, we have had our 02 VFR for 2 years now and didn't notice whether is was coming on or not(wife had said she has hear it come on before) because we dont ever have to sit in traffic.

    The ignorant knuckleheads that had our 09 ( restore project) had it for 4 YEARS and never knew. So ya its hot here, 30c and an incredibly intense Sun (its hard to describe for Northerners who have not experienced it) but I think we have sat in traffic once or twice over the thousands of K's of riding.

    We would probably still be in the dark if we had not had the 09 restore bike overheat on the way home from buying it. I had no idea what the temp was that the fans were supposed to come on at. No I know.

    fyi - the fan will not really have any effect when you are travelling at any speed - basically airflow will push the heat out far quicker. The fan is there for when the airflow is low or not at all - Traffic.... lol

    just now confirmed fans are working on the 02 and 09 bikes, one was a fuse one was a faulty Fan itself.

    The Fan came on at 84c
