1998 (30k miles) VFR800Fi - during a recent oil change (I inadvertantly left the Battery optimiser connected and started the bike, unfortunately the headlights were switched on and both dip beams blew, I'm hoping that hasn't caused any of the following but thought I better mention it!) After the service and new bulbs the bike presented a scratching/ knocking sound from under tank, checking this forum site suspected Flappers on air intake however since then the engine stopped dead. What happens now: When ignition first switched on there's no fuel pump initiation noise (the fuel pump will work with 12v directly connected!) Ignition lights on but not possible to start when push start button depressed, it does nothing. Initially Fi indicator displayed code saying Cam Pulse Generator was issue however that's now stopped and I dont get any messages at all. All fuses okay, I've tested ignition kill switch, push button start switch and many of obvious electrics. Now I'm lost! I have a feeling this is electrical. Any constructive ideas more than welcome.
it definitely sounds electrical from your description. Hopefully you didn't FUBAR your computer with the minor electrical explosion. Hopefully one of our more electrically inclined members will chime in with some diagnostics for you. You could try a search for something like 'diagnose electrical' but our search function can be a bit tedious with the number of results you'll get. I sure didn't know it would do that if you left it on the charger while you start it. I swear I've done the same thing before with no probs.
sorted - spent 5 hours checking all wiring as I suspected the problem electrical. The issue was routed back to the Kill Switch (when in off position, the pump won't prime!) Upon closer inspection there were two wires out of 9 within the harness that had been pinched by being caught against the right steering stop. The second wire happened to be the yellow/red push start and the knocking noise I initially heard under the tank was the start relay shorting against the bare kill switch wire untill it lost continuity. Hey well pleased I sorted this one
