Hey everyone in the 8th gen. I took the bike out today and noticed that my bike was idling at about 1800rpms with the bike in gear and clutch engaged. But when I put it in neutral it dropped to 1500rpms. Also as I remembered if correct I could start the bike with the clutch engaged even with the side stand down. Now it will only start if I put it in neutral. Any thoughts or concerns here. Let me know. Thanks

I think you will find that it won't start in gear with side stand down as a safety precaution. Starting RPM always high on mine when cold. I always let engine get above 147-150 before taking off (VTEC doesn't engage below that temp).

I know about the side stand and in gear, but I thought that I could start with the clutch engaged even so in the past. As far as the idle it was warmed up 165 degrees. That Is the weird thing. I remember and would assume that the Idle would stay constant no matter if the bike was in gear with the clutch engaged or in neutral. what does yours idle at?

I adjusted mine to 1200-1300 rpm, pretty consistant after it is warmed up. After I riden awhile and stop, I just hop on, flip up stand, pull in clutch & start in 1st. I use first to keep it from rolling.

That is how I used to do it as well. I was mistaken about the side stand it did need to be up, but now I can only start it in neuatral. Even pulling in the clutch. Do you think the new levers are missing a sensor point or something? I would hate to have the Neutral sensor to go out and not be able to start the bike.

Bubba I bet your clutch lever is not activating the clutch switch; this sometimes happens with aftermarket adjustable levers. You should be able to hear the microswitch clicking when the lever is fully in. If not you could try adjusting the lever out further. One post I read talked about building up the point on the lever which engages the switch with some epoxy.

"It is always about remembering what you changed before the incident to occur!" I still need to be reminded of this. Thanks Terry and I will look at it and put the old levers on to see if the problem goes away. Always grateful for sound advice and experience.

The 8th gens have two idle speeds. Not sure if they did this on earlier FI models. One in neutral and one while in gear.

The neutral one is for fuel consumption.

The one in gear is to make launching a little bit smoother. The labeling on the bike itself even makes mention of what idle(in neutral) should be.

But from the Photo link put up. Idle should be 1200 +/-100rpm and mine is at 1800rpm in neutral and 15oorpm clutch engaged so something is amiss with the new levers. I also remember that the idle was always about that 1500rpm so it needs to be adjusted down to 1200-1300 for fuel economy I suspect. I will look at both after the Easter hell.

You should be able to reach the knob easily from behind the lower cowl, a Philips screwdriver fits in and makes it so simple it should take about 2 minutes, including putting the screwdriver away

Saw the same thing with my 2015, and just adjusted it this weekend. Fully warmed up, I was idling about 2000 rpm. I backed that down to about 1300, and was not hard at all.

Problem solved. It was the after market Chinese levers. It was not engaging the clutch sensor even though I did have the plug in correctly to have it work. Put the stock levers back and no more problem starting only in neutral. It also adjusted the idle to about 1350-14oo rpms no matter in neutral or first gear engaged. Thanks to all! I will do the idle adjust down to 12oo tomorrow. Anyone want a pair of cool looking VFR levers?

Well, I did tune it down but now it idles at the 1200 mark for a few then goes back to 1350 to 1500rpms. I think the girl hates me or something!;-)

Bubba did you buy the levers that "Arrowfrost" posted from eBay ? I have those and they work great ; the rpm's increase when I let the lever out just like my OEM lever.
