For my 2007 VFR, the manual states that following an oil and filter change, you need to add 3.3 quarts of oil. I've done 3 oil changes on my bike to date and 3.3 quarts doesn't even register in the lower hash of the oil level window. I find that I need to add at least another 1/2 quart to get it to the upper hash of the window. Has anybody else noticed this other than myself? How much oil are you actually using? Like I said, if you use what the manual states, it doesn't even register (or is visible) in the window.

Maybe it's 3.3 minus the filter... but then they state filter as well...

... I really don't think they even know. Looks like your falling in the middle of draining/filter and disassembly.

My 04 takes close to 3.5 w/new filter. I use a slightly bigger after market filter.

I just did an oil change and with the OEM filter and just a tiny bit more than 3.3 quarts, it brought my oil level just a tiny bit above the "full" has mark on the window.

EDIT: Draining and filling all took place with the bike on the center stand and level ground. If you drain the oil with the bike on the kick stand, it seems like everything would slosh to the left side which may end up draining more.

Good point, make sure you have it on the center stand.

3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6...why measure? Just fill w/ oil using proper procedure (e.g. bike upright). Maybe at a gross sense...by the time you get to 4+ quarts you might want to check that you installed the drain plug.

I figure its more important to check regularly for signs of oil loss (burning, leak) or contamination (gasket or crack) as opposed to measure the fractions of a quart when initially filling.

I drained it on the center stand. 3.3 quarts isn't even visible on the oil level window. I have an '07, but it shouldn't matter.

    Oil Level

Try starting the engine and allow it to run a few minutes. Check for leaks. Turn off the ignition. Allow the oil to settle a few minutes. Now check the sight glass.

I just changed the oil on my 02 awhile back for the winter. After starting her up and letting her run, the level went back down some. So then I added a little more and did the same thing. Now that the bike has been sitting for a week or so, the oil level on the sight glass (on center stand) is about quarter of an inch above the top mark.

Is that going to be a problem? I guess I could just pull the plug for a second to let some out, but didn't really know if running slightly above the top mark would cause a problem.

I have let two different authorized dealers change the oil during recall work on my '02. On three occasions the oil must have been added while on the side stand because the the oil level was well above the oil level window (i removed 1/2 quart-US). I have done all the rest of the oil changes (with oem filters) and 3 1/2 quarts-US will fill the case past the upper line in the window with the bike on the center stand.
