Purolator PL14612 or Purolator PL14610 ($6.50 at Pep Boys) I think the 12 is slightly larger than the 10 but I could have that backwards, both fit the VFR800 no problem. For future reference: Motorcycle Oil Filter Cross Reference

I used to use the "Purolator PL14612," however, for the past 2 years or more I have had the "Scott" reuseable aluminum oil filter, as I could not pass up one that was $100 bones, but marked off 50%, then another 50% at a local bike shop clearance bin. Yaaaah me!

I have used nothing but OEM since I bought mine. Not that I am championing that cause but it was just a simpler thing to do for me. Is there really that much of a difference in cost from a dealer OEM to an after market filter considering that most people, other than those who ride to commute, will only change their oil a couple times a year. I haven't done the math but what would the savings work out to. Maybe less than a nickle a day?

I know Stuke rides his as much as I used to so there may be a worthwhile saving there. As far as the K&N, I know nothing about their oil filters, and do have a K&N air filter. I use it only because I bought it and have the chemicals to maintain the element. But if I were to do this over again, I would be staying with a paper air filter as well. That way, I can ride the moment I install the new filter rather that waiting for it to dry before adding filter oil and re-installing.

I was wondering though Stuke, with you re-using that filter over and over, what shape is that O ring getting to be in?

Shouldn't we figure out the best oil to use before we worry about the filter?
    I use the K&N because I don't want a mess when I screw it.

More info needed on that housing stuka. I can see me making one of those and having it blue-anodized.

Randy- unless someone already answered and I missed it: you just replace the .59cent oring at each oil change. If you feel so inclined. I'd bet the filter comes with one.

I think you need to stick with the 2.5" long filter. You might be able to jam a longer one in but if you prefill your filters with oil (and you should) then you will make a big mess.

Make sure it's oiled before you put it in.

There's really not that much room to work with on the 6th gen, especially if you don't have the special oil filter wrench like me. Even after taking off the whole left fairing I had a bit of trouble with the Honda filter. I replaced it with a Purolator PL14612 (the shorter one, 2.5 inches), which is slightly longer than the Honda filter, getting it on was a bitch but still doable. I wouldn't go any larger than a 2.5 inch filter.

I was just doing some checking:
The Purolator PL14610 is a full 3.5" long.
PL14612 is the same filter, only shorter at 2.9".

    Wix 51365 is 2.6".
    Wix 51358 is 2.8".
    Wix 51356 is 3.4".

I was just laying on the floor looking under my bike. The Honda filter is 2.1" installed. Not a lot of room left.

Can you even fit a PL14610 on a 6th gen?

I'm gonna get a 1358 and try it.

I have the PL14610 on both of my VFRs ('01 & '09), I didn't have a problem getting them installed or after they were installed. YMMV

Der Stuka may have an older version of the Scott's filter. The one on the mach 1 91 has metal seal. On the bike for about ten years now. Paid about $115.00 for it. All that is needed is a slosh in solvent or dishwashing detergent to clean it and it's good to go.

Scott's is a good outfit and if asked, a tenner says they would give anyone the exact size or P/N for a National or other O ring of which there are many types.
