That depends on the condition of the car and rust if you live in any of the rust belt states. Most Japanese cars will not rust around the body. You have to look underneath at the brake and fuel lines. Most are covered with a plastic cover of some kind. Stuff gets between the undercarriage and on top of the lines. So you have to poke around. Mileage doesn't mean a whole lot IF the car has been maintained. Take off the engine oil filler cap and look inside. If it's really clean that's good. If you see any kind of build up (sludge) then walk away.

It also depends on how long do you plan on keeping the car, how many miles per year you will put on it etc. Most cars if taken care of will go 200k miles with proper maintenance. Find someone that REALLY knows mechanics of cars to go with you. The thing about the 01 is have it may be close to needing things like brakes, belts like the timing belt, shocks and normal wear stuff that the PO may have used up and it needs it now or soon. Most used car lots just buy at auctions and resell without doing much if anything to them. The term "buyer beware" is most appropriate when dealing with used cars. Good luck

    Miles vs. Age

Toyota is a great brand. That being said, an owner can mess up a car in many ways.If the 97 has been driven with some regularity and they have service records and I was going to keep this vehicle for several years, I would lean towards the 97.You may also want to look at (nadaguide.com) to see the resale value of them to see if they are priced correctly.
It's always smart to get an objective evaluation from a competent mechanic.

I don't think rust is any consideration anymore unless you live on the beach.

I think I would also get a report on your preferred vehicle from carfax.com to see if it has been in an accident or floating around New Orleans prior to you buying it.
