Tilre has less than 800 miles on it. Always run at 42psi - checked before every ride. Any ideas what would cause this? Im guessing manufacturing defect. Tires are Dunlop Sportmax Q2 on a 1996 VFR 750.

Strange... Did you buy it from a local shop? If so, id have them take a look at it. Maybe they can replace it, if they think it's really bad. (however, I suspect it's not a big deal. Just a little blob of gunk that got into the mold. It doesn't appear to be but a few mm into the tread portion of the tire, and not into the carcass.) Id like to see it replaced, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it wasn't. (provided you aren't doing track days on it)

    Seen this before!
When you have been driving it hard out of a corner its been cut by glass or something sharp leaving a lip or small flap of rubber, then as you continue to push it around a corner it tears out a small chunk
    Unfortunately it happens
Seen maybe a dozen times in over thirty years of fitting bike tyre's

Hey ask the question you could get a positive result ?

Date code on the tire is 4811 - tires were bought and mounted on 1/7/12 at 33,309miles. I bought the bike used but it is in immaculate shape with all service records.

I know its a hard call to make but is the tire safe at least for another couple hundred miles of touring (no track days)? It doesnt seem like local shops are carrying the 170/60-17s but rather the 180/55-17s nowadays so I would have to mail order or get a 180/55 put on for temporary. I have a ride going on this weekend that I would rather not miss.

I will have a shop look at it this morning and see if they can get me the right size today.

I had an issue with a Dunlop years ago and got a warranteed tyre oot of them. This was aboot 15 years ago though, you results may vary...just my two cents here, 42 is too much tyre pressure imho, I pump it up that high when I carry a pillion, otherwise, its 34 front and 36 rear, just food for thought...

I would have it looked at just to make sure that if it is not like V-liquor said, a chunk cut off by a road hazard, and it being a defect, that it's just in that spot. Looking at the depth, it is definitely shallower than the tread sipe, so I don't think it's too critical.

That being said, I'm going to play Sherlock Holmes here, this must be an early model VFR as all of the new generations have a 180/55/17 rear, and how often do you ride? Less than 800 miles in over a year and a half? I'm going to say you live in a "seasonal" part of the country and have to wait until the snow thaws, before you can ride. I'm also going to say Welcome!, as this was your first post and your join date is June 2013! With that, it is customary for newbies to post pictures of their ride so we can remove any doubt of you just being a "troll" here. Also, not that it was too important here, putting data about your ride helps with support questions, i.e. 1985 VFR500, most of us just put it in our profile info. Again Welcome and I hope it's nothing major with your tire, now get out there and Ride!

    Cheers!

you should have a 180/55/17 rear tyre on that sucker, a 170 is a honda-think odd ball size anyway. Bin those things and get some fresh donuts, it is your arse after all, thats whats between you and the tarmac...

We have a 5.5 in wide rear wheel, so all the current 600 cc tyres fit our scooters...I will refrain from recommending tyre choice though

I went ahead and updated my profile - bike is a 1996 VFR 750 that I just purchased at the start of the month with 33,900 miles on it. Bike is truly immaculate and owner was anal about keeping records to what was done on the bike and doing all required maintenance. The tire was replaced at 33,307mi and the guy didnt ride it much because he had surgery. So thats why the low miles over the last year or so. Last time I had a bike was about 16 years ago - I would average about 7000mi/yr. I'll post a pic of the bike later since I'm at work right now.

BTW - I just went ahead and got a new tire. Turns out the local shop did have the right size in stock (even though their online inventory didn't). So all is good.

Good deal, now go and ride that baby! As far as my deductions though, WI definitely has seasonal weather, so I'll take half credit on my deductive reasoning.

    Cheers!

It's a fictitious vehicle used as example of what information should be entered...Is that a problem?

I think Tink tried to make one but it turned out like a HD and wouldn't run without rattling apart so he ditched the bitch.

IMO there's an excellent chance your dealershop is going to BS you about that tire. Dunlop has the real story. Shit happens. They know it and take care of biz.
