I was going out today and when I turned the choke off once warm, the engine died. Wouldn't stay lit except on choke. I hadn't added coolant in a long time and in checking it, noticed it was below the low level mark. Got to go out and get some distilled water, but thought I'd ask if low coolant could cause the engine to die?

(I also managed to strip my oil dipstick and could fix it. Got it back in screwed up out of frustration. Will have to get a new one... :frown:)

Sounds like you need a good carb/jet cleaning.

Don't think the stalling is coolant related but I have a used dipstick if you want one cheap.

    Hey

Check your fuel pump and tank.If the pump dies there is no pressure and when you go to low rpm (there is no choke) your bike dies (happent to me today I donĀ“t have a fuel pump but air came into my hose and blocked the fuel from the tank 1-2 min after I turned the choke of it started to act funny then died start it up no problem as soon as it hit the 1200 rpm it started to hick up went down to 800 rpm then died). But it is okay after I took all the air from the petcock.Check also your spark plugs.

    Best regards

Hi Guys, Gmonsen,if your bike is carbureted, and I am pretty sure it is, I dont believe you have a fuel pump. Only the FI bikes have a fuel pump. I will stand corrected, if some of you carbureted guys know for sure your bikes have a fuel pump. Anyway sounds to me
maybe the carbs have some dirt in them,or possibly some bad gas maybe has some water in it. eddie

They've had fuel pumps at least since 85.

    Hey Eddie

    Thanks for calling all VF700 ,750,1000 83-85 a F1 bike.You are sweet:redface:
.These bike can go without a fuelpump also check the fuel filter.I remember one man had problem keeping his bike alive unless it was on the choke. His biking was only running on three cylinders.

    Best regards

You most likely have an air leak.

Give a good look at the carb insulators (boots).
See if there are any cracks. You can tighten up the clamps and see if that helps.

If it's not the insulators, then it's probably the carbs. Has it sat long with gas in the tank?

yes,, add extra coolant and it will idle at a lower rpm,, remember the coolant level is what keeps the bike at a high or low idle ....

Okay, I think I'm having a similar problem. I have a 6th gen and whenever I am stopped and the bike is idling it tends to die (not all the time but a lot) it's just been happening recently. I don't know much about engines but it seems to me I'm having the exact same problem. I set the idle higher but it hasn't really helped. I don't really know where the petcock is... I searched for it at bikebandit under the OEM parts but couldn't find it :frown:

    Can anyone help me out?

Skydog, your bike does not have a petcock. The sixth generation VFR's are fuel injected
and there is no need for one. eddie
