I would like to hear from past or current owners their review of this model. I have read all the archived articles from the "experts", now I want to hear from real world riding experience. This model seems to have a bit of a following. What I would like to hear is....why? Why this or any V4 over many other inline 4's? Thanks.

You would have to ride one in order to answer your question. That's all you'd have to do.

I have owned a bunch of Honda prior to owning my first Honda VF series bike, a CB400, 2 CB750 Nighthawks, and a CB900F. All of these bikes were great machines and being Honda's they were all very reliable. Though I would not say that any of the inline fours ever really suffered from a lack of power, all had to be kept within a certain rev range to make full use of the engines power. One day, when getting gas, I saw a 1985 VF1000F sitting at the pumps with a For Sale sign on the windscreen. The thought of owning a litre bike had never really intrigued me before, but when the owner came out and started it up, I was hooked. The bike had aftermarket exhaust and the throaty growl this thing made was surreal. I talked with him for a bit and we decided on a price, and the rest is history.

The V4 is one of those engines that is just as happy lugging around (though it is suggested you keep the revs above 3500 RPM when cruising to keep the oil pressure up as the early VF engines were known to have oil delivery problems which caused cam issues) and is just as happy when being revved out. The V4 delivers power pretty much anywhere in the rev range and the power delivery is very, well, linear, for lack of a better word. The VF1000F had/has torque pretty much everywhere in the rev range and all you need to do is twist the throttle. For the most part, there is no need to downshift to find the right gear like you need to do with most inline 4's, just twist the gas and off you go.

Like Grey750F said, all you need to do is ride one. The rest is self explanatory. Currently I am on my fourth VFR (have owned a 1985 VF1000F, a 91 VFR750F, a 97 VFR750F and a 2000 VFR800) and have no desire to own any other bike. The 2000 VFR800 I have now, is by far my favorite and at 12 years old with over 60,000 km's, still runs like a top and goes forever on a thimble full of fuel. As a side note, my 1985 VF1000F is still technically in the family. My best friend has owned the VF1000 for the last 12 years, and to this day says he would never part with the bike. His previous bike was a Kawasaki Ninja 1000 (an 85 ish I think), and he says that the Honda is a way nicer machine to ride and has far more power and is far better on fuel, not to mention the sound.
