Look for at least an 86 or newer unless your brother has mad mechanic skills and spare parts.
Gen 1's are not good starter bikes.

It looks clean and it's a decent price. Buy it!

If it's sound, then buy it. They are solid bikes and handle/brake better than the gen 2. Put stainless steel brake lines, good pads on it and a good rear shock. Run a can of Sea Foam thru it a couple times a year. You don't really want to pull the carbs unless you know what you doing or pay a mechanic to do it.

yeah, i checked it out and it didnt feel to sound, and i think it would have been to much bike for the moment. He ended up getting a 1990 VTR 250. Thanks for the help!

I checked out that bike too. Mainly for spare parts for my '85. Cosmetically it is great, but like you said, it doesn't seem too sound.

It's actually alot more faded in person. It didn't run badly, it just didn't feel completly right. It felt like it had seen alot of service and not really come out of it all that well. Also there was a ticking coming from the engine. Very noticeable.
