Yes, it's that time of year just to throw up threads just for the fun of it. Ok, so a certain thread topic kinda got off track a bit with this helmet visor type. The ones that get darker with the sun, transitions type. Well hell, I'm thinking that be so cool to have, but, they are only available on the newer helmets, mines older, so none available, which has me asking myself a question, is it worth it to get a new helmet? Which then this has me asking you folks here what helmet do you have? and why?

Trojen ultra thins....oh! Motorcycle helmet. Shoei X Twelve. Light weight for my neck issues, and the fit is great for the shape of my knoggen. Have had it for several years now and it has served me very well considering the weather I used to ride in. Just replaced the cheek pads as the plastic was wearing through the fabric coverings. Now fits tight like brand new.

When it is time for a new one, Shoei is the likeky candidate again but they have one that comes with the pinloc system and an inside flip down dark visor.

^ Always a good thing to have Randys take on anything, love the quick switch to what head ;) That's the reason I still have the helmet I have, I can still can get the inside check pads+ But it is 15 years old still like new, well the second one is, the first one got taken out with a chain saw I think. Since it was so great besides looking cool, I kept my eye out for another one. Luck had it I found a new old stock on Ebay, win win I say. Still this Visor thing has me rethinking, then add in how long is a helmet good for question when adding in new tech, but I also believe in if it ain't broke don't mess with it philosophy. But now there's like 3+ different styles of Shoeis, GT air, RF series and X12-14 guess if nothing else this is a good time to go try some out.

I bought a Shoei RF-1200 when they first came out. Cycle Gear had the RF-1100 for a $100 less, but I wanted the new safety features:

Lazer Kestrel full carbon fiber with a transitions racing visor. 20151213_162645.jpg

I don't know why it uploaded sideways, it's upright on my phone. Anyway, it's really light, about 1300 grams.

Check to see if the standard pinlock visors fit. Also, just how long does a helmet offer maximum protection vs what the "internet" or the manufacturers tell us?

Are the helmets sold off the shelf or on line the same as the really fast guys wear?

Next we go to the crap that the harleydoods wear that are made of ABS or paper maiche or like what a storm trooper would wear if there was a chrome shop in his hood.

I've went through 2x RPHA-ST helmets this year now (one died in the crash).

It's HJC's flagship model ... noise is about average, but the ventilation is incredible. I suppose that's the trade-off though. Padding all comes out nicely, and the integrated sun visor is super easy to operate, and it's just the right amount of tint for almost all conditions.

The main clear external visor comes with pin-lock to keep your visor from fogging up. When I rode my bike last weekend at freezing temps, it didn't fog up once. What's also nice is that it has a very secure positive latch that is located in the very middle of the visor so it can be operated by either hand without issue.

The weight is quite good for a full face with an integrated visor, and the padding is very comfortable - it takes about 2-3 good long rides for it to break in comfortably.

You know the old adage "if you have a $100 head buy a $100 helmet?" Well I do have a $100 head. I have had an aversion to helmets in the $500-$800 price range not because I don't think they are great but because I have been mostly poor all my life. To me, helmets are like a good pare of shoes. I may buy and not really like it and the thought of have a $500+ helmet on the shelf, that I don't like, fills me with dread. For me, trying a helmet on in the store just doesn't cut it as a shopping experience.

My helmet of choice, when I purchased my VFR was my Scorpion EXO. It is still OK but the pads are showing wear. I went with a newer and cleaner white HJC CL-17
