definitely the 03... but as you can see, I am a biased on this :)
none-the-less the 03 sound like a much better deal. 4 years newer for 150 bucks? come on...
if they are both equally clean and well maintained this is a nobrainer.

I've owned both a 5th Gen and 6th Gen. When you weigh the pros and cons of each, it is a draw. Both bikes are awesome machines. I'd go over both bikes again and scrutinize their condition and maintenance history. Buy the one that seems to be better cared for.

Gear driven cams were gone in 02. I would go with the 5th gen, non vtec. My 2 cents.

I'd go with the '99, but I too am biased.
I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

To answer your question I got to ask what your riding style is. Do you like to ride hard with the knee hanging out or do you like going on a moderate to slow pace taking in all the sights and sounds?

The '99 would be good if you want to ride hard and fast. The '03 is good for the slow and scenic rides.

    LOL!!
Yeah, a hard call here. It is hard to go wrong with either. There is a different focus with the two bikes. I am biased too...
Let us know what you decide.

The VTEC engine is nothing but an annoying gimmick. Go with the non-VTEC with the gear driven cams.

yes, you don't need glasses. I've ridden both generations and just my opinion I think the 6th generation is more suited for leisurely rides because it's smooth, has a less aggressive riding position, and the engine, quite frankly doesn't really come to life until after 7K RPM.

The 5th gens, however are a more "raw" bike in that even when I'm idling I can feel a slight rocking back and forth motion from the engine and of course you have the gear cam whine. With the engine it starts developing usable power at 5K RPM.

Just curious, have you ever ridden a 5th gen? If not, we got that ride coming up sometime september we could switch bikes for a while and you can let me know what you think!

Joey does bring up a point - that each bike seems to have a different character. Weird how two bikes with near identical specs can be so different.

Thanks to all for the info.I'm looking for a toy to tame the dragon here and there.
I'm not the best rider street or dirt and for having a style thats a good question, thats kind of like asking what type of music I like and when do I listen , or what I'm doing when I'm listening to it.I have had a couple dirt bikes also I'm a x stock car racer,so the need to rip it up and fill that void will always be there. I ride to take the edge off, what ever the head needs!

Thanks for the info I'm leanin toward the 99'

I have ridden 4th 5th and 6th gen bikes. They all ride pretty similar to me and the diff between the sporting characteristics are so slight that the avg rider most likely would not notice IMO. Is this not the same guy that had one bike that had several owners vs another bike with one owner? If that's the case, I'd look at both but more likely go with the bike with fewer owners... A bike that changes hands a lot makes me nervous. If not, here's the biggest negative for the 6g vs the 5g to me: it costs more to get the valves checked due to the friggen vtec. Other than that, it's pretty much cosmetic.
