Valve Adjustment

    I have a '98 Viffer with just over 16k on her. I know I am due for a valve adjustment now. Is it ok to prolong this maintenance, or am I asking for trouble? One of the guys I work with says that he has never had a valve go out of adjustment until after 30k. What do yall think?

    I have the same bike and I am planning to begin to think about checking the valves at around 30K. Most vfrs that are checked at 16K are well within specs. I checked my 4th gen at 22k and found everything in spec too.

    Now don't go and claim me as the reason not too , but you're probably all right, but since it's not mine I can't say for sure. I've done both the 16K and the 32K and at both times they where way with in the limits, in fact on the 32K there is only one that was a .10mm on the exhaust where they are all suppose to be .9mm all the intakes were spot on. How do you sleep not knowing is your call. but a lot of folks don't see much needed there. but it's always a good idea to at least check. but that's just me,.

    Thanks for the input. If I somehow roast my engine, it's all RVFR's fault...j/k.

    I'll get it done as soon as I can afford, but for now I need to concentrate on just getting her back on the road. She's getting the fork treatment tomorrow, then it's tires, oil change and brakes. Maybe I'll be able to ride by mid April. It just snowed yesterday, so maybe I'm being overly optimistic.

    My 2000 has 23k and running good, I'm not worried about it. My buddy has 45K on his and no problems, runs great.

    My '99 didn't need any adjustments at 16,000 mi. but had one that needed adjustment at 30,000 mi. YMMV (Literally).:biggrin:

    I actually just got my bike back together from checking the valves. I have 25000 miles on it and all the valves were within specs. I wouldn't even think about pulling it apart until 25 or 30k. :thumbsup:

    I got a '99 and at 16K all the valves were in spec. But there's gonna be a 32K check coming up soon. I'm crossing my fingers I don't have to adjust them, I'll keep you posted!

    I don´t think your bike need that,I´ve read that if you care the engine with frecuent oil changes,not over revolution,warm the engine at least 3 minutes before ride it´s almost sure it´ll be within specifications, but if you can check the valve clearences is better than repare it. My bike is 33000 miles and it´s ok. I recommend you to change all the coolant, clutch and brake brake fluids at least every 2 years.

    Just put some seafoam in the tank, and you should be good to 100k.

    A message from someone with 75K and going strong!

    First! Always "check" your valves at the required intervals. If nothing just for your peace of mind and to brag on your quality piece of machinery. I have done all the required checks and still at 75K I have "NO" I repeat "NO" valves out of specification. This is an everyday rider and always oil changed at 3500 miles with filter. 5th Gens are the real VFR's anyway. I can't wait for 100K!

    What is the cost of a piece of mind valve adjustmet today??? My 99 has 34k and was checked at 16k for 300$. It was with in specs. Should have bought beer instead...

    I never let my bikes warm up for more than a minute .I think it`s a waste of fuel.I just start it put on my helmet and gloves and go.Mind you I don`t drive hard for a few KM.

    My bike is at 31K miles, just did a valve inspection last night and turns out it needs an adjustment. Dang it, it's shim time!

    How involved is the check? Is it something the garage mech can do at home with, you know, a coat hanger , aluminum foil and some chewing gum?

    you need kit for the lifter on the V-tec valves part number in manual.
    just ck'd mine at 17,000 all in spec.

    ops my bad you have 98 so you don't need kit.
    you would need manual and good set of feeler gauges.
