Troubleshoot bad speedo

So a while back - okay, four years ago - my speedo/odo quit. So far I've used the tach without issue. Over the winter I finally got around to looking at fixing it. I bought a new speedo cable, thinking that would be a quick fix, but no good - still doesn't work.
Before I start tearing anything apart, I wanted to see if anyone out there had any experiences and/or tips for quickly troubleshooting and resolving.
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

It's never sat very long - other than over the winter of course. But the trouble started in the middle of the summer. And the odometer stopped working at the same time, which led me to believe it was the cable. With the cable ruled out (and I do need to manually turn it to confirm that - good point), it only leaves the box assembly/speedo joint down below...

 

Ya, if you replaced the cable then I'd look at the connection to the wheel; maybe the 'gear' (or whatever it is) is stripped out.

 

Often enough the little tangs (for lack of a better term) in the speedo drive get folded over during a hasty installation while putting on the front wheel.

i have a gen 5 but same thing happened except min would register a slower speed then no speed after a while. mine was an easy fix, speedo sensor that runs from the connector to the front sprocket. swaped em out and good to go

I had a cable go on my 90FL. If it's a cable drive, then it's driven from the front sprocket bolt via a plastic "nut" (1st weak link). The plastic nut is part of the drive assembly bolted to the sprocket cover. Remove the cable at this end, spin the back wheel and the drive should turn.
If a new cable is to be fitted check the speedo end turns when connected to the drive end.
Routing the cable is fiddley and access to the back of the speedo head is restricted without taking everything to bits.
If you don't get the fit onto the speedo head correctly, it won't drive the speedo.
Anything after that and I'm afraid you are on your own.

 

i had to replace that plastic nut a few weeks ago, it was just worn out. simple fix, just takes a screw driver.

As for the speedo, if it was falling back and not recording actual speed and then finally stops functioning, the part you need is what I replaced last year. I replaced the nylon nut drive which is attached to the bottom of the speedo cable, just a screw driver away. Part number 44808-MR7-013. Very simple fix.
