I am planning to repaint my 2004 Italian Red VFR in a high-gloss Italian Red color . . . only better than stock.

    You know what I mean?

Cut through the threadjacks and keep us informed. The clutch mod sounds interesting - and unique. You are our VFR Petri dish, growing the rare VFR culture.

The clutch parts showed up yesterday and the thinner frictions were not correct, 12 finger instead of 10 finger. So I tossed the OEM clutch back in with the 99lb springs so I could ride this weekend and will figure the Barnett crap oot later.

You may find that's all you need is more pressure on the clutch. I was going to suggest before to shim your stock springs and see what happens. You already ordered the current stuff before I could. you could also shim the clutch pack .005-.012" or what ever. There are shims that big and you may be able to find them from some of the equipment you work on.?? Or someplace like Applied Technologies(old Bearings Inc) or the alike.

I've found the stock clutch seems better over all than the Barnett from the ones I've installed. Most likely just my preference.

I don't think shimming a slipping clutch would work. Shims don't change the spring "rate" and could limit the travel of the disks in the basket because the springs would reach full compression sooner.

Yes shims will change the pressure/rate. When you change the installed height your applied pressure will change. Same thing you do for valve springs. There is a tolerance there. Plus they are not designed to be used under full compression. That's called coil bind and it does bad things.

Example, these numbers are made up. A spring that applies 100# pressure at 1" installed height and 150# at working compressed height. Shim it .030 and it now applies 110# installed and 160# at compressed. As long as there is no coil bind.

There is a maximum the spring is rated for. Actually it's a range and you can't exceed that with out coil bind. The spring is still rated the same. It's just the pressure it's appling can change to a certain point.

As far as shimming the basket it would have to be checked so what your saying doesn't happen. IF there is to much play (travel) a couple of thou might make it better. Fine tuning makes a big difference sometimes.

I'm no clutch expert; but Grey's explanation makes mechanical sense to me.

Not that that means anything

Since a clutch is also the way that oysters propogate. there may be more meaning there than is realized.

    Barnett

Well as it turns oot the two friction disc's that were incorrect were pulled wrong by one number and Barnett sent the correct ones and I got them today free of charge. An A+ on customer service, the folks at Barnett did not bat an eye at making it correct. :thumb:

    What I ran with

I decided to run the stock clutch for the time being and installed the 99lb springs with the steels roughed up with a glass bead blasting. I know it will cause premature wear but was looking to ride with this problem behind me. The grip is quite arresting and the pull on the lever is severe but WOW it does hook up and have another in reserve. Will post up when I install the Barnett and let ya'll know how the extra plate set up functions.
