Why is the bike so heavy?

    single carbon muffler lost 19pds, light weight battery 3 pounds, 520 chain 3pds. 24 pds right there. the frame looks really heavy but super strong-it is a heavy beast

    How long does a 520 chain last compared to a 525 or 530 one then?

    Light & Last do NOT go together, so that's the wrong question :)

    That said a quality x-ring 520 on quality sprockets will last just as long as a 530, most chains wear out one spot long before the rest. Chain life is more a function of use & maintenance & less of the chain size if equal quality !

    YMMV literally !:)

    The difference between a 520 and 530 chain is 0.5kg.

    I know a lot of guys that are tracking 1000cc bikes with 15k and more miles. I have 10k on a DID 520 and AFAM sprockets on my track bike CBR 1000. Good maintenance and quality parts and they last just as long.

    My VFR's a week or two shy of two years old and the original 520 chain & sprox are fine after 18000 miles.

    I don't believe in maintenance for O-ring chains and I still get 25,000 plus miles lol. The O-rings are designed to keep the oil inside the chain and the contaminants out. No point in lubing the outside, it just attracts dirt. I still keep the proper tension, but I don't lube/clean it.

    Well said CR, I do the same but do have to clean it periodicly, as we have rain quite often in the UK :) But I did my EURO Tour in July 2500 miles on my 525 conversion with alloy rear sprocket & top of the range RK X-ring chain, never had to adjust the chain. Temps were in the mid 30's for most of it. That chain has done about 12K miles & is still good, its had 3 alloy rear sprockets in that time. They are quite worn by about 4-5K miles. I'll be changing the front sprocket this winter.

    Have a read here http://www.rogueracing.org/gearing.htm see the 530-V-520 section, 15K racing miles on an S1000RR on a 520 says it all.

    How many miles on your VFR and how many times have you changed the chain and sprockets?

    That article is from a friend of mine that owns that site and I got him to be a member here though he does not visit often. He is a plethora of info. I agree about the chain being sealed but I think its still a good idea to keep it and the sprockets clean as a lot of the wear is on the sprockets themselves. Add a little ground up sand, dirt road grimes spinning at high rpm's and the sprockets and chain exterior does get a lot more abuse.

    I find that the chain needs a lot less cleaning, if you don't lube it, since there is no lube to attract dirt and sand. Also the chain doesn't seem to want any lube until it's at the end of its lifespan, as in all the internal oil has made its way out and the orings start drying up. At that point, it's pretty much over anyways and the lube is just a spent time bandaid. I'm sure I could get over 30k like this with a 530 chain, but I'd rather have the extra half a hp or so lol.

    I definitely agree keeping the chain clean is a good thing though.
