Hey guys, I'm an engineering student who bought a 2007 RWB 6th gen a few months ago. Poked around all the forums a lot when I was shopping and found a ton of good info so I wanna say thanks for that.

Probably never would have looked into the VFR if the name didn't strike a chord with my aviation interest. I love the bike and am looking forward to keeping one in the stable for a long time. Though, for better or worse, the honda electrical problems bit me in the ass after putting less than 2k miles on the bike.

I bought the bike for $3250 with 21k miles in great condition because it had quite a lot of nice farkles; good frame sliders, a steering damper, the luggage etc. I was confident because the PO said he had the stator and r/r replaced and I didn't expect to have to deal with this so soon. I'm not too upset about it because I took a circuits class last year and getting into the charging system was like a little lab refresher, plus the beefed up components should now last the life of the bike.

Originally got it for touring with my girlfriend on the back but she's not so crazy about it anymore since leaning back on the topbox is no fun at 90 mph. She can just ride my 250 now though.

Hi Spandrel and Welcome to the Madhouse!:Welcome:

Kudos for photos with your first post. I am sorry to hear you have already encountered the usual VFR charging system gremlins.

Sadly its not just a matter of fitting any old replacement RR or stator as there are heaps of truly awful aftermarket components out there and you could easily substitute one dubious part for another. Hopefully you invested in a decent shindengen RR from https://www.roadstercycle.com/ or similar reputable vendors. Otherwise you might consider installing a cheapo digital voltmeter from tBay - the type which shows volts as numbers not a row of coloured lights, to keep an eye on the charging system. It won't prevent problems and they are rarely super accurate, by they will allow you to get a feel for what is normal so if you see the volts rocket or fall through the floor it gives you a chance to head for some place safe before the energy left in the battery is drained and you end up stranded at the roadside.

There are a lot VFRWorld members in SoCal and if you update your profile with a rough idea of the town/area where you are based you may find Long, Reggie or one of the regulars will be in touch to meet up for a beer or two someplace.

    Take Care - ATGATT

    Welcome to our World.

You bike is still a puppy and once you properly deal with the Stator RR issue, you can then ride the thing like a cheap hooker and put it away wet. I have had stator issues twice now, both while on long tours. Fortunately in both places I had resources to help me out as far as accommodations. And being on a tour at the time, I elected to just get the OEM stuff which was the easiest to get and quickest way to get back on the road. Next time, if there is one, I will improve with aftermarket stuff .

Mine has over 222,000 km (-+138,000 miles) and it is going to Alaska in June. Still runs like a top once I gat a gremlin problem worked out and fixed.

    Thanks for the welcome guys

Yep lol, I really like the look with just the side bags and the seat cowl on so I’m happy, though I shelled out for the rear preload adjuster wrench that I don’t use anymore.

I’m doing a dual Major in aerospace/mechanical engineering at San Diego state, gonna be a junior in fall ‘20. I’m on year 3 out of 5 so the worst is yet to come but I love it at SDSU so far.

Yeah I did a lot of reading and scouring forums while the bike languished, till I finally decided to nut up and get the series mosfet SH847 through roadstercycle and an OEM stator. I figured the PO had gone with oem replacements for both and they just didn’t solve anything. I wired the RR directly to the battery and am thinking of adding a voltmeter to the unused connectors on the old RR harness. My budget is tight but good fixes aren’t cheap and cheap fixes aren’t good.

I’m looking forward to getting the same kind of life out of mine. Alaska is on my target list for sure.

Visual Flight Rules. Probably not the way most people come to look at a VFR, but whatever works. :)
