I may be back, but it's doubtful. Nothing wrong with the VFR...fantastic bike mechanically, performance wise, maintenance wise....and on and on....
Sold the 2002 VFR ABS a couple of weeks ago. Bought this bike after decades riding various BMWs. It was a great bike, it did everything well....

I replaced my thermostat in March this year. My VFR is an 02 and I used an OEM part. It runs about 167 degrees on highway at 50 F
1/32 wire rope and cinch clamps work well on one bag. will test and see if a better solution exists.
it's a PITA VFR500....troublesome at least.
The rope saddlebag stays have unravelled with minimal use. They are now useless. Has anyone on here fixed this issue...wire rope maybe? Thanks...

Those temps are good. Cooling system, working. I really doubt the air filter can be restricted.
What temps are you running? That is what my mpg problem was...a stuck thermostat. Also had a mouse nest in the air box!
I get around 40-MPG after replacing the (stuck half open) thermostat. It seems later model years get better MPG than the 2002/2003 years?
190 in stop and go and 225 (as long as the fans kick in) when stopped is about right IMO.
